ERIE, Pa. -- The fifth-ranked Gannon wrestling team beat Waynesburg 39-3 Wednesday night at the Hammermill Center. A.J. Milanak (Apollo, Pa./Kiski Area), Tony Petrella (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Bishop Hartley), and Chris Daniels (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) each recorded pinfalls for the Golden Knights.
John Fleming (Bethel Park, Pa./Lakeview) started the night with a 2-0 decision win in the 125-pound contest. Corey Bowers (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) took a forfeit as Waynesburg did not have a 133-pound entry. Milanak then pinned Abdul Yusuff at the 1:54 mark of their 141-pound bout to put GU ahead 15-0. Ted Hoag (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park), Zack McKendree (Vandergrift, Pa./Kiski Area), and Bret Terry (Canal Winchester, Ohio/New Albany) strung together three straight wins to clinch the dual for the Knights.
Petrella pinned Robert Schultz in their 184-pound match and Daniels took a pinfall victory over Matt Zimmerman in the 197-pound bout. Heavyweight Frank McGrath (Hammonton, N.J./St. Augustine's Prep) finished the event with a 12-7 decision win.
GU is now 5-3 in dual action, while Waynesburg dropped to 6-9. Gannon travels to Ashland (Ohio) University for a tri-meet Saturday, February 6. The Knights face East Stroudsburg at 10 a.m. and then take on Ashland at noon.
