SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Four consecutive technical falls by Filip Novachkov, Nick Fisher, Geoff Doss and Travis Rasmussen sparked the Cal Poly wrestling team to a 32-9 victory over San Francisco State in a non-conference dual meet Thursday night in the Golden Gators' Main Gym.
With the win, Cal Poly improved to 5-2 on the year, two more victories than all of last season. San Francisco State fell to 1-6 and is now 1-37 all-time against the Mustangs in dual meets.
Novachkov earned an 18-2 win over Kamil Smart at 141 pounds to improve to 17-4 while Fisher was a 20-4 winner over Aaron Wilson at 149 to lift his mark to 9-2.
Doss posted a 19-2 triumph over Isaiah Jimenez at 157 and is now 9-5 for the season. Rasmussen (pictured above) completed the blitz of technical falls with a 22-7 win over Ian Wrenn at 165. Rasmussen is now 11-9.
The Mustangs led 20-6 at that point.
The winning streak didn't stop there as Steven Vasquez, Kelan Bragg and Ryan Smith all won by decision, giving Cal Poly seven straight wins after a forfeit at 133 pounds, the opening bout of the evening.
Vasquez beat Gene Choi 4-1 at 174, Bragg was a 6-2 winner over Zach Jimenez at 184 and Smith earned a 10-7 win over Vince Bordi at 197, giving the Mustangs a 32-6 advantage.
San Francisco State's lone win on the mat was a 5-3 overtime decision by Steve Franklin against Jim Powers at 285.
Mustang 125-pounder Micah Ferguson completed the scoring with a 6-1 decision against Pierre Bondoc at 125.
Cal Poly returns home to host Stanford next Friday at 6:30 p.m. and Boise State on Sunday, Jan. 24, at 2 p.m. for Pacific-10 Conference dual meets.
