Volpe picks Rutgers

Anthony Volpe of Miller Place, New York has given a verbal commitment to Rutgers.

Volpe placed third at the 2009 NYSPHSAA State Wrestling Championships in Division I at 145 pounds. He is a three-time NHSCA Nationals All-American and a 2007 Cadet Nationals Greco-Roman All-American.

It marks the second verbal commitment that the Rutgers wrestling program has received this month. Last week, Joe Duca, a two-time New Jersey state placewinner, verbally committed to Rutgers. It also marks the second verbal commitment from a Rocky Point wrestler this month. Volpe's teammate, Stephen Dutton, a 2009 state champion, gave a verbal commitment to Lehigh earlier this month.

"I decided on Rutgers because of its coaching staff and their focus and determination in being a nationally recognized program," Volpe told InterMat.

Volpe also considered Hofstra, Maryland, George Mason, and Brown.

"I hope to become an asset in the wrestling room at Rutgers and develop into an All-American and a national champion," stated Volpe.

Volpe plans to wrestle at 152 pounds for his senior season and projects as a 157-pounder in college.
