Alton bros. unbeaten in season debuts at Wilkes Open

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Penn State Nittany Lion wrestlers Andrew Alton (Mill Hall, Pa.) and Dylan Alton (Mill Hall, Pa.) made their season debuts today at the Wilkes Open, competing at the open event after off-season surgeries delayed their season starts. The twin brothers, ranked No. 7 at 149 and No. 5 at 157 respectively, combined to go 5-0 before taking medical forfeits as planned.

Wrestling in their first live action in almost nine months and after off-season shoulder surgery, the duo fared very well. Andrew went 3-0 at 149, including a technical fall and a fall before medically forfeiting out of the tournament as previously planned. Dylan posted a 2-0 mark at 157 including a pin before taking medical forfeits as planned as well. The wins do count towards each man's season records and so the tandem heads into the New Year with 3-0 and 2-0 marks respectively.

The Lions will head to Chattanooga, Tenn., for New Year's Day once again as Sanderson's crew will look for its fourth straight Southern Scuffle crown. The 2014 Southern Scuffle, hosted by UT-Chattanooga, takes place on Jan. 1-2, 2014. At this time, the participation of the Alton brothers in the Scuffle is doubtful. Penn State's next home dual is set for Sunday, Jan. 12, when the Lions welcome Purdue to Rec Hall for a 2 p.m. showdown.

With the full season of Rec Hall duals sold out prior to the start of the campaign, a very limited number of standing room only tickets are available to a few of the remaining Rec Hall duals. People may purchase tickets by calling 1-800-NITTANY or by visiting the Penn State Athletics ticket office located in the BJC. Fans are encouraged to follow Penn State wrestling via twitter at www.twitter.com/pennstateWREST and on Penn State Wrestling's Facebook page at www.facebook.com/pennstatewrestling. The 2013-14 Penn State Wrestling season is presented by The Family Clothesline.

A medical forfeit is because of an injury that occurs during a dual or tourney. A medical forfeit cannot be planned. They defaulted and that should really reflect on their records. Quitting a tournament should have consequences.

A default is where one takes the mat and does not continue to wrestle. A forfeit occurs when one does not take the mat at all. I am not sure that the character of the forfeit, e.g. medical or otherwise, is something that arises in the discussions in the rule book - a forfeit is a forfeit and has no ramifications either way.

Total BS how do you forfit in a tournament with out a loss? I need some one to explain this.
Goofball (1) about 11 and a half years ago
One has to take the mat and shake hands to take a loss.

Not exactly true. If you are DQ'd in the championship bracket of a tourney, the match(es) you forfeit in the consolations count on your record.
npope (1) about 11 and a half years ago
So, you are saying for example, if wrestler A is DQ'd in the first round of a tourney (with full wrestle-backs) that he would end the day 0-2; one loss for the DQ and the other for his lack of participation in the consolation bracket? While I haven't seen any discussion of the official rules on the matter, that seems a bit odd to me.

Interesting, 30 years of wrestling and I had no idea. I have never been in that situation, not taking the mat that is. I just figured if you entered a tourny you either win or lose.
lu_alum (1) about 11 and a half years ago
How is it possible that you've been following wrestling for 30 years and have never seen someone medical forfeit in an open tourney. Happens all the time.
Colorado-Hawkeye (1) about 11 and a half years ago
I will repeat my self. I have never been in that situation, I have never chosen to NOT TAKE THE MAT. I have gotten hurt and taken Med For, and have always received a loss. In Iowa guys do not just quit a tourny. So In Iowa it is very unheard of.

Lu ALUM learn to read dude. I said quit with out a loss not quit in general.

Should we give the Nittany Lions the national championship right now? Or wait until March?
Soldier184 (1) about 11 and a half years ago
Let's wait until March.
Colorado-Hawkeye (1) about 11 and a half years ago
This is still a 3 way race. Minn could have 3 champs and 5 in the finals. Iowa could do the same.
jwcedar (1) about 11 and a half years ago
Do not forget the Big 12 wrestlers that have semi-finalists as well. I was just thinking if Howe and Rutt would have returned to Wisconsin what a bunch of point getters even they would have and possible champions. Must have been some bad blood between Davis and Howe for them to jump ship to Oklahoma?? Anybody know?

A med forfeit is no big deal and part of the rules in an open tourney. I think Mitchell Port did it in Nov. at the Mich St open (and he's awesome).
Oh, and by the way... - No team ever won a championship in December but the Iron Lion wrestlers will "EARN" another title in March against some top notch teams.

CO-Hawk, Iowa could have 5 in the finals and 3 champs? Surely you are kidding? St. John & Ramos maybe. Wait, didn't Ramos get beat by Schopp and then got pinned at the Midlands by Colon? As for the rest, all I have to say is: 7 matches to 3 = Penn State 24 - Iowa 12 .... And that happened at the CHA!
Colorado-Hawkeye (1) about 11 and a half years ago
I am very serious apparently you are narrow minded or just an Iowa hater. We have the tools at 125, 133, 157, 165, 174, 184,Hwt to make a legit run at the finals we have the tools at 125,133,157,174,HWT to make a legit shot at the title.

I am not saying these guys are a lock just that they have the ability. I love all of you Iowa haters the only reason there is parity these days is because the Dan Gable way is now in every other wrestling room. Count the top head coaches and see who they are :)
